Mediums, Grounds and Varnishes for Oil Paints

Gamblin Mediums , Grounds and Varnishes

Mediums extend colors, and modify working properties of oil paint from a stiff paste to a fluid consistency.  Mediums can broaden visual qualities by increasing transparency in layers to create a range of surface qualities from high gloss to matte.

COLD WAX  MEDIUM  is formulated with Gamsol and white, pure beeswax.  It has a knife consistency and will make paint thick and have a more matte finish.  It can be applied as a matte varnish.

GALKYD  thins oil colors and increases transparency and gloss.  When used in greater proportion, it will level brush strokes and create an enamel like surface.  This is the fastest drying medium – thin layers can be dry to the touch in 24 hours.

GALKYD LITE  Thins colors and increases transparency.  When used in moderation, it will retain brush strokes.  It is more fluid and less glossy than Galykd.

NEOPMEGILP  is the contemporary version of Maroger.  It is a soft gel medium to maintain the body of colors, increase transparency and flow and impart a smooth, silky feel.  It dries at a moderate rate and is workable for hours.  It gives a satin finish

GALKYD GEL  is a stiffer gel compared with Neomagilp.  It holds thicker, sharper brush strokes.  The Gel dries more quickly and increases transparency and creates impasto.

GAMSOL  Uses for Gamsol include – thinning colors ( a little goes a long way!)  If you use too much, it will compromise the ability of the paint to form a film.  It can be used to modify paint mediums. Do not use Gamsol with products made with natural resins!  It is used to clean up brushes, palettes and knives.

GAMVAR VARNISH  Saturates colors in your painting and gives your work a unified protective surface.  It is odorless.  Use a brush to apply to your work.   It comes in a Gloss, Satin or Matte finish.

GAMBLIN GROUNDS AND SIZING  The ground is the foundation of your painting and the sizing seals the porous fabric and isolates it from the ground, paint and varnish.  First, apply the PVA sizing to your canvas.  Sizing has a neutral pH and protects the cloth.  Gamblin Ground is strong, bright and non absorbent foundation for oil paint.  It is made from alkyd resin, titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate.  The ground can be tinted .  Apply 2 coats.
